Mason Jar Salad Tips

Updated: Feb 18, 2023

Mason jar salads are probably one of the easiest and healthiest meal prep foods I make. If you are short on time and want to eat healthy then here is everything you need to know about mason jar salads.

Obviously to start you need a large mason jar. The trick to mason jar salads is to layer it properly so that nothing goes bad or soggy. Nobody wants a soggy smelly salad!!

Tip #1 - Let's Talk Layering

Layer 1: Start with your dressing. Check out this great recipe!!

Layer 2: This layer is for hard veggies like; celery, red onions, asparagus, carrots, peppers, cucumbers, whole cherry tomatoes or radishes.

Layer 3: this layer is for protein, beans, chickpeas, corn, broccoli or zucchini.

Layer 4: this is where you add your grains like; quinoa, rice, couscous, or pasta!

Layer 5: here you add your greens (spinach, romaine lettuce, arugula, leafy greens, cabbage).

Layer 6: add you nuts and dried fruit!

Tip #2 - Dry Ingredients ONLY

Make sure all the ingredients you are adding are dry. DO NOT add wet greens, they will go bad and make everything else smell! Also make sure that nothing is hot. Eg; if you are adding quinoa make sure it's cold.

Tip #3 - Tight Seal

Always make sure your lid is secured tightly, this will prevent air from getting in and making everything soggy!

Tip #4 - Keep Refridgerated

Keep it refrigerated until you're ready to eat! With a properly sealed lid they should last 4-5 days refrigerated.

Tip #5 - Adding Extras

Some foods that should be added to the salad when you are ready to eat it are:

  • avocados,

  • fresh fruit

  • cheese.

When you're ready to eat the salad, take it out and empty it in a bowl, add your dressing and cheese and ENJOY!
